Dura 1.0: your household's cash table

Releases Released 4 min read

The first release of Dura puts your household's cash on one shared table. You fill labelled envelopes when money comes in, take cash out of them when you spend, and everyone in the household sees the same numbers on their own phone as it happens. It is built for households that earn electronically, through Payoneer or the bank, but live in US dollar cash, so it also tracks what the swap to cash costs you each month.

What's new

  • Envelopes with monthly budgets. Dura suggests six to start: Groceries, Transport, Gas, Airtime & data, School and Fun money. Budgets are set per month and do not roll over.
  • Cash in with the exchange cost. Pick a funding source (Payoneer, FNB and Other are set up for you), enter what left the account and the cash you got in hand, and Dura shows the difference in dollars and as a percentage. Then split the cash across your envelopes.
  • Spend and Move cash. Take money out of an envelope for something you bought, or move cash from one envelope to another.
  • IOUs and Settle. When one envelope's notes pay for another envelope's spend, Dura records an IOU such as "Groceries owes Transport $9". Settle it in full or in part, and opposite IOUs cancel out.
  • The piggy bank. One savings envelope per household, with a goal and milestones at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%.
  • Cash counts. Count the real notes in an envelope. If they differ from Dura, you pick a reason, such as a spend you forgot to record.
  • Stamps and streaks. Nine stamps to collect together, from First stuffing to Exchange hawk, plus a streak of days with an entry or a count.
  • The coach. A chat that answers questions from your own household's envelopes, spends and piggy bank, and leaves a short insight on the table every Monday.
  • Household invites. Invite someone by email or share a 6-character join code. Each person has their own login, and owners can hand ownership to another member.
  • Live sync between phones. When one person records a spend, the other sees it straight away, with a notice such as "Tendai added a spend".
  • Activity, undo and export. Every entry is listed with who recorded it. Any entry can be undone, and you can export your records as CSV or JSON.
  • A warm, tactile table. Kraft envelopes with paper tags, a taped piggy card and postage-stamp stamps, in light and dark mode, with tap targets at least 44 pixels tall.

How to use it

  1. Start your table, name your household, keep the envelopes you use and set a goal for the piggy bank.
  2. Tap "Cash in" at the bottom of the table, pick the funding source, enter both amounts and split the cash. "Fill to budget" fills each envelope to its budget and "Rest to piggy" sends the remainder to savings.
  3. Tap an envelope to open it. Choose "Spend", "Move cash" or "Count cash". When you spend, answer "Whose cash did you actually hand over?" if you paid with another envelope's notes.
  4. Tap "Settle" on an IOU tag to pay it back, and tap the piggy card to feed the pig.
  5. Invite your partner from Settings, under "Members & invitations".
  6. Open "Coach" or "Activity" from the bar at the bottom of the screen.

Good to know

  • An email invite lasts 7 days. A join code lasts 24 hours.
  • Each person can send 30 coach messages a day, and the coach only sees your own household.
  • Undo never deletes an entry. It adds a reversing entry, so the history stays complete.
  • Want to look around first? "Play with a sample month" makes a separate sample household with demo data that never mixes with your real one.
  • Since 28 October the coach needs your own yes to AI, and the Monday insight needs a yes from at least one member. See Your privacy: consent, AI controls, Terms and Privacy.
