Dura for developers and AI agents

Releases Released 3 min read

This release opened Dura to the tools you already use. An AI agent, a script or your own app can now read your household's table and record spends, cash-ins, moves, IOU settlements, cash counts and receipts for you, using a token you make and can revoke at any time. Everything it writes goes through the same ledger as the app, so balances, IOUs, stamps and the live update on your partner's phone come out exactly the same.

What's new

  • Personal tokens. Make a token under "Apps and agents" on your account screen. No password changes hands, and the list shows when each token was last used.
  • A JSON API. Read your households, envelopes, entries and IOUs, and record spends, cash-ins, moves, settlements, counts and receipt scans. Each entry comes back with a plain-English summary.
  • The dura command line. One small file you download from Dura. It shows readable text in a terminal and JSON when an agent reads it, for example dura spend groceries 12 bread.
  • Safe retries. An agent that repeats a request after a dropped connection does not record the spend twice.
  • Agent instructions. A plain file at /developers/agent.md that you hand to an agent with "Read this file and follow it".
  • Developer pages. /developers covers connecting an agent, a five-request quickstart, the command line, the API reference and ready-made recipes such as the grocery run and the month-end report.

How to use it

  1. In Dura, open Settings and choose "Your account & devices".
  2. Under "Apps and agents", give the token a name such as "Hermes assistant" and choose "Create a token". Copy it straight away: it is shown once.
  3. Give the token to your agent or app, together with the command line or the API, as the connect an agent page describes.
  4. To stop it, open "Apps and agents" again and choose "Revoke" next to the token.

Good to know

  • A token acts as you, in every household you belong to, until you revoke it. It never reaches another household.
  • Nothing is deleted through the API. Mistakes are undone with a reversing entry, as in the app.
  • Amounts are in currency units, so 12 means twelve, not twelve cents.
  • Envelope names can be shortened, but the command line refuses a name that could mean two envelopes rather than guessing.
  • Each token can make 600 requests every 5 minutes.
  • Since 28 October, a token only works once its owner has agreed to the Terms in the browser. Until then the API answers consent_required to everything except /me and /tokens.
